Indiana Academic Standards for Music: Anchor Statements

The Indiana Music Education Association and the Indiana Department of Education collaborated to revise, update, and create  the current Indiana Academic Standards for Music Education. These are a reflection of the National Core Arts Standards, written in cooperation with the National Association for Music Education. Music lessons focus on concepts, skills, and experiences specified in these standards.

In Music, each grade level focuses on mastering a different aspect of various standards.

  1. CONNECT with a varied repertoire of music by exploring the relationships between music and personal experience.
  2. CONNECT with a varied repertoire of music by exploring the relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts.
  3. CONNECT with a varied repertoire of music by exploring the relationships between music and history and culture.
  4. LISTEN & RESPOND to a varied repertoire of music by audiating.
  5. LISTEN & RESPOND to a varied repertoire of music by describing, interpreting, analyzing, and evaluating music and its elemental components.
  6. LISTEN & RESPOND to a varied repertoire of music by interpreting and expressing music through movement.
  7. PERFORM a varied repertoire of music by singing, alone and with others, from rote memory and written notation.
  8. PERFORM a varied repertoire of music by playing instruments, alone and with others, from rote memory and written notation.
  9. CREATE a varied repertoire of music by improvising melodies, variations, and accompaniments.
  10. CREATE a varied repertoire of music by representing audiated and aurally perceived music.
  11. CREATE a varied repertoire of music by composing and arranging music with both traditional and non-traditional notation.

In June 2014, the NAfME and national partners released the National Core Music Standards* as part of the National Core Arts Standards.
